Dear Family,
In case your invitation was lost (or has not been picked up yet because your son/daughter has not turned their uniform in yet), here are the banquet details. The banquet will be at the school cafeteria on Tuesday, October 23rd at 6:30 PM. Dinner will be tacos and we ask that you please sign-up to help with the sides/desserts using the link a few posts back. If you are having trouble with the link you can email me at tsmitchell@graniteschools.org and I can add you to the sign-up sheet. We would love to see your whole family there. We are asking for $5 an individual or $10 a family to help cover our costs. Team members are free. After dinner there will be a series of awards. Let me know if you have any questions.

As we approach the end of a terrific cross country season, it is time to begin thinking about our end of the year banquet. We are tentatively looking at at date between October 23-25. This would be the week after the state meet. I am looking for parents who are interested in helping coordinate the banquet. If that is something you would like to help with, please send me an email at tsmitchell@graniteschools.org. Thanks!

Westlake Results
We had an outstanding day out at Westlake! Many runners took advantage of perfect conditions and fresher legs to achieve season and lifetime PR's. I am very proud of you all. Way to represent Olympus. Special recognition goes to our medal winners Annie Condon (11th) and Nate Stringham (15th). Full results at http://www.runnercard.com/runner/data/171235/4303/Result/2012_Westlake_XC_Classic.htm
As we begin our taper it is important that we are decreasing mileage at a slow rate. As a result it is important for all the runners to get 25-45 minute runs in on Friday and Saturday. For all that are interested the upperclassmen are leading a trail run tomorrow for practice. Meet at school in the courtyard at 9:45 AM to carpool up to the Pipeline Trail by 10:00 AM. Saturday the run is on your own, but feel free to find a teammate to run with.
Lastly, as the region meet approaches it is very important to be healthy. We want to avoid the colds/viruses going around school. The best way to do this is to get sleep, hydrate, eat well, and take your multi-vitamin. Have a great weekend!

5k to 3 Mile Conversion
If you would like to convert your 5k time from this weekend to 3 miles to compare it to our other races you can enter your 5k time into this converter: http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/calculator
Select 5k and enter your time. It will give you equivalent times for a number of distances. It will not be as useful for comparing other distances but will do a good job for your 3 mile time.

BYU Autumn Classic
The BYU Invite is this Saturday. This is a very large meet with many very good teams. The course is spectator friendly because it is three loops of just over a mile. It is our first and only 5k of the season as our other meets are 3 miles. The finish is on the track and spectators can watch the race from the stands. There is a $5 admission charge per person. The bus will leave from Lincoln Lane at 7:40 AM.
Race times are as follows:
Boys JV-10:10
Girls JV-10:40
Girls V-11:15
Boys V-11:50
Awards-12:30
More information about the meet can be found at: http://www.byutrack.com/various/Special/Meet_Info/2012-13/Autumn/Aut_Clas-12.htm
The top 30 individuals and top 2 teams from each race receive awards. We should have several team members in the hunt for awards so plan to stick around for them. This will put the team bus back at Olympus around 2:00. I also want to remind all athletes they must inform me before leaving with a parent. If an athlete is riding home with another team members parent I need written permission to allow them to leave. Finally, athletes need to stay until the end of all races unless prior arrangements have been made with me.

Wasatch Results
Results from today's meet can be found at http://runnercard.com/runner/data/176752/4082/Result/2012_Wasatch_Invitational.htm
Race weather was ideal, however, due to the many hills and higher elevation times were on average about a minute slow. Despite the hills we had a number of impressive performances and even a few PR's.
We are at a point in our season where our training cycle is going to result in some tired legs as we continue to train hard for our more important races later on in the championship portion of the season. I want to challenge the athletes to see each practice as an opportunity to add a layer of fitness and to trust that the hard work will pay off when we taper off our mileage in a few weeks.
Athletes need to ensure they are getting enought sleep (eight hours), eating well and taking a multivitamin, and stretching and icing to aid the recovery process.
There are two things you can control each day: your attitude and your effort. Bring the A game.

Pre-Region Results
We had a number of excellent results at the Pre-Region meet. Many athletes ran a new PR. The boys finished fourth and the girls were sixth. Full results can be found at http://www.runnercard.com/runner/data/171235/4302/Result/2012_Pre-Region_7.htm
Athletes should complete two steady runs of 30-60 minutes over the long weekend. They should also do the Titan circuit one of those days and continue to do a good job stretching after runs. We are having a few injuries flair up and good stretching could prevent some of them.

Pasta Party Schedule
Parents,
For those of you parents who are new to cross country, the pasta parties serve as an opportunity for the students to get together and share a meal/hang out the day before each of our meets. The family that hosts can expect ~25 students. I would like to try something a little bit new for the rest of our pasta parties this year. At the end of this post you will find a link to a google document that can be modified by anyone who has the link (I will also send it to parent email addresses later today or tomorrow). If all parents could sign up for one or a few of the different slots this would take some of the responsibility off of the students for volunteering each week and we can have a set schedule. This will also allow you as parents to sign up for the items and days that work best for you. Our most immediate need will be for this Wednesday before our Pre-Region Meet.
If you sign up to be a host, please include your address and phone number as well as the time you would like the pasta party to start (generally 5:00-6:00ish). If you sign up for sides you can send those with your athlete or drop them off yourself. You could also contact the host parent and see if they could use any other assistance. We have a great group of athletes on the team and this is a fantastic way to show your support. Thank you for all of your help and especially to those of you willing to open up your homes to the students. Pasta parties are a wonderful thing for the students and I remember how much fun they were when I was in high school. The team can provide the host family with paper products to use (if desired) and those will be sent home with the athlete the day of the party. Coaches will generally not attend the parties as it is intended to be for the athletes, and I see this as a great way for me to take step back and also get parents involved. Please let me know if you have questions/concerns about this process.

Cross country is a team sport where each individual counts, and we want to show our teammates that we value their effort and performances.

August 20-23
Next week practice will be switching to the afternoon. Due to teacher meetings, practice will run from 3:00 to 5:00. This will also allow for the team to acclimate to the heat prior to our first race at Sugarhouse Park on Friday the 24th. It will be especially important for everyone to be hydrating throughout the day in preparation for these afternoon practices. See you tomorrow for the last morning practice.

Great job everyone! I am very excited for everyone who ran. Thank you to all the families who came out to cheer on the runners. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to come over and meet a few more of you before the storm rolled in. Athletes should get an easy run in tomorrow on their own and take Sunday off. See you Monday at Olympus at 8 AM.
